ABOUT IASI

Iasi is one of the oldest and important cities in the country, that has always simbolized the strong, authentic Romanian life style. The capital of Moldavia, the town has enriched the national patrimony with priceless spiritual and material values, has written glorious pages in the history of the country and in the memory of it's nation.
Iasi was first mentioned in a commercial franchise issued in 1408 by the Moldovian seignior Alexandru cel Bun. Still, because there are older buildings (for example, the Armenian Church built in 1395), it is believed that the city is a lot older.
Iasi is legendary known as "the city of seven hills", but as it has extended, now it actually sits on nine hills (Cetatuia, Tatarasi, Galata, Copou - Aurora, Bucium - Paun, Sorogari, Ciric, Repedea and Barnova), with altitudes of 40 m - in the Bahlui meadow or 400 m on the Paun or Repedea Hills. The main hills are Copou, Cetatuia, Tatarasi and Galata. In the east side of the city, you can see the Ciric river, where there are 3 artificial lakes, that are a known recreational area.
Iasi has an impressive cultural and religious patrimony formed of over 50 churches; it is a multicultural city, that has numerous Foreign Cultural Centers : the French and the German Centres, the British Council, the Greek, the Italian and the Jewish Communities.
